My first telescope was a 50x Tasco with no mount my mom bought at a 2nd hand store in 1970. I propped it on pillows in
my west facing 2nd floor bedroom window or hand held it in the concrete yard behind our row house in Baltimore. The first time I saw Saturn
I excitedly jumped up to get someone and knocked it out of the window to the concrete below.
In 1985 I purchased this, my second telescope, from the bargain basement at Montgomery Wards for $20, just in time to see Halley's Comet.
I understand this is a relabeled Vixen scope that has also been sold as a Celestron Cometron CO-62.
It's been a nice scope all these years, though in need of a decent mount. The $10 camera tripod was just frustratingly shakey and
I could never afford a better mount. When I got the dob I figured I'd piggyback it on that, then decided to wait till I built the
split-ring mount for the Dob. Getting the SCT changed that plan, and then I found a nice Orion equatorial mount (right) on ebay and I think
this little fellow will live there - it's earned it.
I found a Meade Quasar 60mm OTA on ebay very cheap, figuring to put it on the eq mount. It takes the same size eyepieces, etc, as the Tasco
but I dunno... we'll see.
