PRIDE of BALTIMORE
Pride of Baltimore

My Time on Pride

BOTTOM

Pride was launched on February 27th, 1977.
I snapped this shot with my 110 shortly after the slings were removed

In October of 1981 we sailed over to Chestertown Maryland.
Here "Leroy" puts us on course out of Baltimore's Inner Harbor.

This trip we sailed under Captain Armin Elsaesser.
Armin was lost with the boat and three other crew, five years later.

But the boat never comes or goes without taking a turn around the harbor for folks to see her.
Looking at the MV Port Welcome, another boat I worked on, with the McCormicks Spice Company behind - both of which are gone now.

Setting sail under way, a pair of crew climb aloft to set the topgallant.

The topgallant set...

The crew climb back down.

Engine off, we sail in the cool October dawn,

sails drawing...

aloft and alow...

and the boat moving right along.

"Cynbad" was always smiling, but it was hard not to smile on such a nice day, sailing a Baltimore Clipper

Greg Pease came by...

...to snap a picture for his book.

Not having a helicopter, I climbed the mast to take some pictures.

This was my first sail to anywhere on Pride since I came aboard on my 21st birthday in September,

so I toted my little 110 camera up into the fore-top,

and took pictures of how things went together...

Then out on the bowsprit.

to get some pictures there.

as we sailed across the Bay on a beautiful day in October.

At the mouth of the Chester River, we dropped sail and motored up to Chestertown..

On the way back to Baltimore, we set sail at the river's mouth, but there was no wind. One of the crew and I took the Zodiak and snapped some pictures - I had one shot on my camera - this was what I took.

I was hired because I had square rig experience, was a Baltimore resident, and knew how to operate black powder cannon...

which was important because we were going to the bicentennial of the Siege of Yorktown!.
Here bunker and I reload after firing.

We sailed to Annapolis and took several soldiers aboard to transport to Yorktown.
Here we are roaring into the York River.

Headed to Glouster Point, VA.
Sun Paper clipping.
I went ashore and visited friends in the reenactment, bringing back several members of the 1st Massachusetts Continentals to help us fight the ship.

Bunker searches a pouch, I'm standing in the hatch with my back to you.

Bunker's got his palm and is sewing while Phil Sbraccia enjoys being armed to the teeth.
