4/7/2012: The Height of Fashion

I started fitting the fashion pieces that cover the counter planking's end grain; and the transom wings that reenforce the part of the transom that hangs beyond the side of the hull.

With those installed, the "fancy piece" was fitted and installed. This piece forms an decorative arch, the inside of which will be finished with a mahogany veneer. This piece was also sanded thinner at the ends to give the transom a little bit of a bow.

Under the fancy piece is the name board which is bordered, top and bottom with some 1/16" half-round molding I got from Doll House Collectables a long time ago.

4/9: Yesterday I looked for some red paint to paint the molding with, but it was $7+ for a pint of the store brand - a pint! I went to the "Dollar Store" next door and grabbed a $2 can of Regal Red spray paint. I masked off the molding and gave it a couple of coats. Some touch-up and it doesn't look too bad. Rather than mask off the other side, I sprayed some paint onto some cardboard and brush painted it on. I've got to find a can/jar of paint without the gold and platinum in it.

4/10: Installed the other three channels today, and gave them a coat of paint.

4/10: Since I pulled out the deck clamp, I was rethinking the deck. I'd really like to get some thin plywood, like 1/8" "doorskin" and some birch veneer which will give me a deck about 3/16" thick. But it's hard to find that stuff around here.
The new deck clamps are in, the deck beams were thinned down and reinstalled. The mast partners put in place, and the partners for the cabin trunk. Blocking is going in between the beams to give some surface area to the deck clamp and lock everything together.

Friday the 13th!

I'm sure that means something to someone, to me it meant getting the mahogany filler piece installed in the transom, building the cabin trunk, and fitting the 3/16" luan plywood sub deck.

The cabin trunk was made from some 1/8" plywood from a cigar box of something. Part of it Came from a battery box I had made for Constellation but I laid it flat on it's own deck and opted not to use the upright box. The trunk is actually an inner sleeve - the cabin trunk you'll see will slip over this like a box lid. This bit is basically then, a hatch combing.

Subdeck

The cardboard deck pattern was recut since the deck clamps and beams have moved. That was traced onto a pice of 3/16" luan plywood and cut on the bandsaw. The subdeck was trimmed, a hole cut for the cabin trunk, a little shaving here and there, and it dropped in like it was made for the boat.
The deck will get sliced so it will take to the camber of the deck beams as well as the sheer.

4/14: On the 100th anniversary of the day RMS Titannic sank I only painted the top strake of the bulwarks and took some pictures with some sticks where the masts ought to be. I also marked the subdeck with the positions of hatches, bits, etc.
